Compostable Biopolymers

Biopolymers or BioPlastics such as PLA and modified PLA plastics are derived from readily renewable resources offering significant advantages over plastics synthetically derived from petroleum, which make up over 99% of of the plastics in the the world today. PLA behaves like a traditional plastic yet will fully degrade into water, carbon dioxide and organic material when composted. PLA highly recyclable and incinerates cleanly so it offers three responsible end of life scenarios; it is also quite pure and doesn't leach toxins like many other plastics.

NatureWorks LLC is the maker of Ingeo™ PLA which uses 65% less fossil fuel resources to produce, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80-90% compared to traditional petroleum based polymers.  Derived from corn grown in the USA.  Fully biodegradable and compostable meeting the most stringent scientific requirements for biodegradability and compostability - BPI and ASTM D6400-99 certified.

Bagasse: Residual Sugarcane Fiber

Bagasse is biodegradable and compostable, made from residual sugarcane fiber after juice extraction.  Instead of being burned the fiber is pulped, processed and molded into disposable products that offer a highly sustainable alternative to traditional products made from foam, plastic or virgin paper.  The tableware has no plastic or wax lining applied to it and can be used for both hot and cold items.

The USDA has very stringent safety standards limiting the percentage of post consumer materials allowed in food service products.  Due to this, our suppliers utilize FSC Certified Paper when the use of paper is required.  FSC certification ensures that the highest standards of sustainable farming and minimal environmental impact from processing.  For example, the use of only Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) Recycled Paper.

Recycled paper causes 74% less air pollution, 35% less water pollution and creates 5 times the number of jobs, than producing paper from trees.  It saves old-growth trees, forest eco-systems, native habitat and biodiversity.
